c. 1595-1620
The finely potted bowls have steeply rounded sides and slightly inturned barbed rim. The centre of each is painted with the well known bird-on-rock and moon motif below to fruiting peach sprays on the wall. The outside is painted with a continuous scene of a river landscape with a further bird on rock near plants and flying birds. The body is moulded with vertical ridges separating the walls in segments.
14 cm
A very similar but smaller bowl from the Troesch Collection is illustrated by Rinaldi (1) and is classified as typical Shape IV.2
Like this Troesch bowl most of them are about 8-10 cm.
The present bowl is of larger size and much rarer.
One from the Tom Lurie collection but painted on the outside with figures is illustrated by Theresa Canepa in Jingdezhen to the World, The Lurie Collection of Chinese Export Porcelain from the Late Ming Dynasty, Llandysul 2019, No. 33
Similar bowls are not very common in Western or Far Eastern collections, though the Topkapi Saray has many of them.
