Early Kangxi, ca 1670
The thinly potted cups and saucers are painted in the 'Master of the Rocks' style, the saucers with a central medallion of a river landscape showing a horseman, the other side of the river shows a thatched hut on a promontory. The cobalt blue is executed in several shades of blue enriched with 'blobby dots'. The cavetto is painted with further horsemen wearing hats alternating with trees below a narrow border of pine needles and 'blobby dots' below the rim. The reverse is painted with two branches of bamboo. The cups are decorated on the outside with a similar design of horsemen in two rows, the interior with a central landscape. Cups and saucers have a four-character mark mei yu ya zhi ('elegantly made like beautiful jade')
Diameter of saucers 9.4 cm
A pair of saucers are illustrated in Richard S. Kilburn, Transitional Wares and their Forerunners, Hong Kong, 1981, No. 103
