C. 1730
The thinly potted cups and saucers are painted with the subject of 'Charity', represented by a nursing woman dressed in voluminous robes open to reveal her breasts, flanked by two boys, one holding her hand, the other holding a stick, all between two birds perched on two tall leafy branches of aster-like flowers and flying insects. The rims are painted inside and out with a narrow border of 'peacock feathers' interrupted by four 'eyes'. The centre of the cups and the base of the saucers show a floral rosette.
Diameter of saucers 13.8 cm
A similar cup and saucer is illustrated in Howard & Ayers, China for the West, London 1978, No 44
