BF 63 A blue and white dish for the Japanese market

明天啟 青花人物紋盤

Tianqi period (1621-1627)

The flat central panel shows a boldly painted river landscape with a scholar seated under a willow and holding a book while looking over the river, all below a moon. The everted rim is painted at one side with six medallions of prunus heads reserved on blue.
The base has a four-character mark of Chenghua
Diameter 16.5 cm

The asymmetric placement of the medallions shown on the rim is a characteristic of Ko-sometsuke wares and typical of early 17th century Japanese ceramic aesthetics.
