The waterpot is in the form of a slightly waisted tree trunk with grooved rim, well carved on the black-lacquered outside in high relief with a large flowerhead and buds borne on a leafy stem and a five-character inscription hua zhi fu gui ye which can be translated as 'the flowers will bring abundance and wealth'.
The inside is lacquered red.
The base shows the stippled grain surface in a reddish-brown colour.
