Northern Song dynasty, 11th-12th century
The cupstand is well modelled after a lacquer prototype with a small alms-bowl-shaped receptacle resting on a high-footed saucer.
The whole is covered with a russet-brown glaze with dark areas resembling ‘hare’s fur’, except for the interior of the hollow foot and falls irregularly short of the foot
Diameter 11,6 cm
With Japanese wood box
References: Mowry, Hare’s Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers, Nos 12 and 13, for two comparable cupstands
A russet-glazed Ding ware cupstand with cup is illustrated by Rose Kerr, Song Dynasty Ceramics, No. 40
Cupstands of this type have been produced during the Song dynasty in various materials, such as ceramics and lacquer.
The present example appear to have been directly inspired by prototypes glazed in rich caramel-brown glazed and fired at the Northern Ding kilns in Hebei province during the Northern Song dynasty.
