Ming dynasty, 15th-16th century

The ovoid body is carved in openwork with three variously decorated bands, the middle section moulded with chrysanthemum scrolls between a honeycomb pattern below and foliage scroll above, all below an everted barbed mouth rim, covered overall in an unctuous sea-green glaze.
The original base is replaced by a 19th century ormolu mount.
Height 16 cm

A similar Longquan openwork vessel with original base in the British Museum is illustrated by Jessica Harrison-Hall in Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, cat. no. 16:34, where the author notes that the vessel may have been used as an incense container or as a brush holder.
A similar piece with original base described as a candle holder was sold at Christie's New York, 25 March 2011, Lot 1648
