EF 58 A small painted Cizhou jar

元 磁州窯花紋小罐

Yuan dynasty (1279-1368)

The jar is of baluster shape resting on a countersunk base and is freely decorated with two stylised floral sprays, the leaves depicted by broad brush strokes, enclosed within barbed panels divided above and below by foliage motifs, all between horizontal line borders. The shoulder is encircled by a band of dots below the short tapered neck.   
The painting is picked out in dark brown on a creamy ground beneath the finely crackled translucent glaze stopping short of the mouth and foot revealing the coarse buff ware
