BFE 69 A rare large blue and white conical cup

明崇禎 青花錐形杯

Chongzhen period(1628-1644)

The cup has rounded sides narrowing towards an unglazed pointed base.
It is painted in deep shades of blue with a river landscape depicting large rocks, trees and mountains. A solitary figure is standing on a promontory gazing over the water below a moon. A band of zig-zag pattern encircles the shoulder below the short waisted neck.
Height 9 cm; Diameter 9 cm

A similar cup of conical form but without the waisted neck was sold at Christie's New York 16 March 2015, in the sale 'An Era of Inspiration, 17th century Chinese Porcelain from the Collection  of Julia and John Curtis', lot 3529.

It is rare to find pieces with a pointed unglazed base. It is possible that these bowls or cups were meant to be supported on a stand either made of porcelain or another material. Another possibility could be that it was meant to be put in the sand to stand upright, possibly to be used as a large bird feeder
