Wang Xizhi 王羲之 (303-361) was a famous calligrapher who excelled especially in semi-cursive script. He is particularly remembered for one of his hobbies, rearing geese.
He is believed to have learned how to turn his wrist while writing by observing how the geese move their necks.
One of the present dishes shows him with a still empty scroll while he is watching a goose as if to try to get inspiration before starting his calligraphy.
