18th/19th century
The Bodhisattva is shown in one of her many manifestations as the Songzi Guanyin (Bringer of Sons). She is seated in the Royal Ease, dressed in long flowing robes with cuffs and borders incised with floral scrolls, open at the chest revealing jewellery and showing part of her underclothes with a stylised shou character. Her serene face with downcast eyes below a cowl covering her topknot.
She is holding a boy who is cast separately, one bent leg resting on her raised knee. Her left arm is held protectively around his waist. He is wearing a tunic, his face showing a happy smile below his tear-shaped haircut.
