Western Zhou dynasty (1046-221 BC)

The axel cap is of slightly tapering form, cast at the closed side with a wavy design. The flat end is decorated with a double ring design. The open end has two rectangular apertures for the insertion of a linchpin, divided by a raised rim. The surface is covered by extensive areas of malachite encrustation (stand included)

Baron Docteur Ludo van Bogaert-Sheid was a world famous scientist who avidly collected early Chinese art. The collection was sold at Sotheby’s in 1990 and the proceeds were donated to the Born-Bunge Foundation in Antwerp.
