WFE 39 A fine and rare ivory figure of Budai

明 象牙雕布袋和尚

Ming dynasty, 17th century

The figure is standing with his head slightly bowed to the right. He is wearing long robes with his belt loosely fastened revealing his belly and chest, and toes. His head is finely carved with elongated ears with  a happy laughing expression, with his mouth slightly open showing his teeth. He holds a pearl in his right hand and a small bag in his left. A fly-whisk is fastened under his belt at his back. The ivory shows areas of a warm, mellow patina.
9.7 cm high; with double lotus wooden stand

Provenance: An old Dutch collection acquired in the 1930s

特徵：布袋和尚的頭部雕刻精美，耳朵細長，一手持珍珠，另一手則拿袋子。整體呈現溫暖柔和的象牙古色。
尺寸：高9.7公分；附木質蓮座。
來源：荷蘭私人藏家於1930年代獲得之舊藏。
