A carved bamboo ‘melon’ snuff bottle

19th/20th century

naturalistically carved in the form of a melon with concave oval foot, encased in leaves and curling tendrils, with a smaller melon growing from under a leaf, original bamboo stopper in the form of a melon

height 5 cm

from a Dutch private collection acquired prior to the 1980’s

This well carved bottle is appealing for its naturalness and for its elaborate network of leaves, tendrils and smaller melons. A similar bottle in the form of a peach is illustrated in Hugh Moss ‘Snuff Bottles of China’, London, 1971, pl. 140.
