A red overlay glass snuff bottle

18th/19th century

the rounded bottle with wide mouth finely carved through the red overlay to the bubble-suffused glass on each main side with a jumping carp between tall lotus stems, each narrow side carved with a smaller carp above a lotus leaf, the recessed foot surrounded by a wave border, jadeite stopper

height 5.3 cm without stopper

Provenance:
from a Dutch private collection acquired prior to the 1980’s

The carving of this bottle is of very fine quality, with the crisply carved large fish contrasting with the slender and delicate lotus stems. The depiction of fish in combination with lotus forms a rebus for ‘May you continuously have plenty year after year’ (liannian youyu).
