A miniature ‘hair crystal’ snuff bottle

18th/19th century

the compressed ovoid bottle supported on a small recessed foot, skilfully carved to position a single vertical black tourmaline inclusion in the centre of the main face, the narrow sides finely decorated with mask-and-ring handles, rose quartz stopper

height 3.5 cm without stopper

from a Dutch private collection acquired prior to the 1980’s

The small size, the unpolished frosty interior and the finely carved mask-and-ring handles and foot of this very charming bottle are all indicators of an early date of manufacture. A related bottle is illustrated in H. Moss and S. Sargent ‘This Snuff Bottle Monkey Business, The Mullin Collection and Its Story’, Hong Kong, 2012, pl. 100.
