A rootwood incense tool vase

17th-18th century 

The trunk-shaped vase is left in its natural form, with a central aperture at the top, extending down three quarters towards the base.  The smooth surface has patinated to a warm dark brown colour.

12.5 cm high


Formerly in the collection of Jan Habbema, acquired in Indonesia prior to 1936, thence by descent in the family.

Jan Habbema formed a vast collection of Chinese art whilst stationed as a high official in Bojonegoro, Indonesia, until 1936.
