A small enamelled porcelain box and cover

Jiaqing period (1796-1820), circa 1808

The box is of rounded form with petal-moulded sides and standing on a slightly tapering foot rim. The cover is decorated in polychrome enamels on the raised central panel with a portrait of Charles III or IV of Spain, encircled by a Latin inscription featuring the date 1805. The rim of the cover is decorated with circular and rectangular motifs below a band of dots, which is repeated on the box. The side of the box is further inscribed in Latin. The base is painted with the Spanish coat of arms. The box and cover are decorated on the interior with a yellow flower head.
