An enamelled porcelain box and cover

Hongxian, c.1916

The square box with canted corners is painted on the cover with a central panel finely enamelled in delicate colours with a landscape showing a scholar and attendant walking alongside the lakeshore towards to a group of houses. Two sailing boats are floating in the water. The sides of the box and cover are decorated with a geometric ground of small florets in iron-red and gilt, with reserved landscape panels on each side. The base is inscribed with a four- character mark of Hongxian in iron-red.
