A blue and white porcelain snuff bottle

19th century

the double gourd-shaped bottle densely painted in underglaze-blue with gourds growing from leafy branches all against a ground of thin foliage, several gourds randomly picked out in copper-red, the flat base left unglazed

height 6.1 cm

from a Dutch private collection acquired prior to the 1980’s

Although blue and white porcelain bottles of similar form and decoration are known, examples with copper-red decoration are rare. Gourds represent fertility, abundance and luck, and snuff bottles were often inspired by their shape.
