A blue and white bowl

Kangxi (1662-1722)

The bowl has steeply rounded sides rising to a flared rim. The exterior is painted with three arrangements of antiquities, including archaic bronzes, vases, arms, books, scrolls, and incense implements. There is one animal in each arrangement, two caged birds and one mythical animal. The interior is painted at the rim with books, a chessboard, scrolls, a musical instrument sheng and a dagger, all above a central panel with further antiquities. The base is centred with a flower head in a double circle.
